Thinking about Humanization of design

-- Chen Hongjun

in the face of the sexual excitement and uproar when designers first spoke in the 1980s and 1990s, excessive intoxication and noise will only make the design industry float on the surface, bind itself and lose its way. On the contrary, it is necessary to calm down and do some systematic rational thinking and logical sorting. It is conducive to clarify ideas, see the essence, avoid blindness, and make the design of the new century develop in a healthy direction

1. Humanization of design is based on the rationality and functionality of design. Without the rationality and reasonable functionality of scientific structure, humanization will go to extremes and eventually go against humanity

modern design is the combination of science and art, technology and human nature. Science and technology give design a solid structure and good functions, while art and human nature make design full of beauty, interest and vitality, and become a harmonious and close link between people and design. One-sided emphasis on one side and neglect of the other will make the design go to extremes, contrary to the original intention of the design. The reason why modernist design is criticized and criticized by people is that while emphasizing rationalism and functionality, it ignores the attention to humanization and diversification, and goes into the wrong path of highly rationalization, indifference, simplification and functionality; The reason why postmodernism, which came into being in the 1970s, did not win the recognition of most consumers and gradually declined after the 1990s, largely lies in its pursuit of personalization, humanization, diversity and decoration, while walking into a dead end that ignores and ignores functions and structures - many postmodern product designs are simply unusable and have become "conceptual design" in the true sense. The bookshelf designed by Italian designer sottsas in the 1980s uses plastic veneer materials, with bright colors and unique shapes. It hardly has the function of bookshelf, but its performance is stable and reliable, more like an abstract sculpture. Although such a design also has diverse and vivid characteristics, and even contains deep cultural metaphorical colors, it is useless for consumers. How can it be humanized? Mr. Li Zhengdao, a famous Chinese American scientist, once compared science and art to the two sides of a coin, and vividly discussed the inseparable relationship between science and art. As the "baby" of science and art, isn't the rationalization and humanization of modern design just like two sides of a coin

2. Humanization of design is the unity of "humanization" and "materialization" in design

human design and design objects always reflect people's aesthetic consciousness, ethics, history, culture, emotion and other spiritual factors in a certain period, which is the "humanization" of things and the "humanization" of creation; However, certain spiritual factors such as human consciousness, emotion and culture need to be expressed with the help of certain material forms. As the carrier of human lifestyle, the design object must bear a part of the bearing and expression function of human spirit. This is the "materialization" of human spirit and the "materialization" of human beings. "Humanization" and "materialization" constitute the interactive relationship between people and design objects. Design is the unity of "humanization" of objects and "materialization" of people, and the two complement each other. People who are completely divorced from human design and people who are completely divorced from design do not exist either. In this sense, humanization of design is not a "new trick", but a characteristic that human design should have. What designers do is to make this "humanization" and "materialization" process more smooth and harmonious, so as to achieve the integration of people and design, design and people. The thoughts of "the unity of heaven and man" and "things and I forget" advocated by ancient Chinese philosophers reflect the dialectical understanding of this relationship

3. Humanization of design is a balancing agent for the development of high technology in human society

the rapid development of high technology is gradually changing all aspects of human production and life. While showing human great conquering power and unparalleled intelligence, it also brings people new distress and anxiety, that is, loneliness, alienation and emotional imbalance. Many futurists have expressed this concern faintly. John Nesbitt said, "since the 1970s, industrialization and technology have gradually shifted from the workplace to the family. High-tech furniture reflects the glorious industrial era of the past. The peak of high technology in the kitchen is the emergence of food processors, which has industrialized our kitchen. Minimalism has made our living room inhuman." Alexander King wrote in "a new industrial revolution is just another technology": "In a room, the concentration of information input, the concentration of non personal and long-distance communication possibilities, the density of education and entertainment channels, together with many other factors, may make the family lose mobility and separate the family from people's external contact. This may easily lead to the growing alienation of individuals. It is not the retirement of the active anti mainstream culture we see today, but the passive and unconscious addition Play alienation, and lose human dignity and consciousness. To put it more strictly, will the automation of most human activities eventually lead to human automation? The answer is: very likely. " The automation of human behavior is a reality that human beings do not want to see, and it is also against the essential attributes of human beings and the ultimate goal of human high-tech development. Therefore, in a high-tech society, people are bound to pursue a balance - a balance between high technology and high emotion, a balance between high rationality and high humanity. The more advanced the technology, the stronger the desire for balance. So John Nesbitt believes that "wherever there is a need for compensatory high emotion, the more high technology in our society, the more we hope to create a high emotion environment and balance the hard side with the software side of technology". "We must learn to balance the material miracles of technology with the spiritual needs of human nature", and realize "the transformation from forced technology to the balance of high technology and high emotion." And the realization of this emotional and human balance, as a design closely related to human life, is duty bound. Many visionary designers have realized this important task of design. At the "First World Symposium on bionic design" held in Stuttgart in 1995, the designers, scientists and artists attending the meeting called for attention to the influence of design on the future of mankind, and played a role in solving the increasingly sharp contradiction between human nature and technology, making artificial objects "naturalized" and "humanized". Therefore, humanization of design is an inevitable requirement of high-tech development. As a complementary mechanism of high-tech structural tension, humanized design will always act as a balancing agent between high-tech and high emotion, and go hand in hand with the development of high-tech

4. Humanization of design reflects the essential characteristics of "design for people"

design is human design, that is, to meet human physiological and psychological needs, material and spiritual needs. The main body of design is human, and the users and designers of design are also human, so human is the center and scale of design. This scale includes both physiological scale and psychological scale, and the satisfaction of psychological scale is achieved through humanization of design. In this sense, the emergence of humanized design and humanized design is entirely due to the essential requirements of design, and is by no means the result of designers' pursuit of style. Without the reflection and satisfaction of people's psychological requirements, the design deviated from the right track. Therefore, humanization of design has become an unchanging criterion for judging the merits of design. Mr. Li Yanzu said, "what is good design? In today's changing technical level, market needs, aesthetic taste and other conditions, it is difficult to have an eternal evaluation standard. But one thing remains the same, that is, the design pays full attention to people from traditional chemical fertilizer to fine chemical industry, and puts people's value in the first place." Mr. Li's point of view is reflected in the design community's attention and attention to humanization. In the "Sony design vision" design competition held by Sony Corporation of Japan in 1988, the work of a young designer named brain Elliot - "Annon TV" won the grand prize. In this work, the designer has completely changed the functions, modeling principles and use methods of traditional TV sets, and designed "animon" into a walkable and obedient "TV robot". The user's remote control enables it to come and go at any time, and can adjust the screen angle and change the image according to people's intention, so that people can fully enjoy the "fun of use" and "pleasure of use". People really want to sigh their greatness in front of such a design. Because in the process of using design objects, human nature has been released and satisfied at will. The award of brain Elliot with high work efficiency benefits from his deep attention and exploration of human nature and his deep understanding of the idea of "designing for people". Human design will always have the vitality of human life only if it is people-centered, for the healthy development of human body and mind, and for the perfection and perfection of human personality. "Without the goal of loving and respecting people, design will deviate from the right direction." As American contemporary designer Dreyfus said, "if the product blocks people's activities, the design will fail; if the product makes people feel safer, more comfortable, more effective and happier, the design will succeed." The words of De Gong are worth remembering and pondering by modern designers

5. Humanization of design is a never-ending design realm in which human beings pursue an idealized and artistic lifestyle

with the gradual improvement, deepening and rise of human cognition, human cognition will move from the "Kingdom of necessity" to the "Kingdom of freedom", which is the inevitable law of cognitive development. And human design will also move towards a higher realm with the improvement of their own understanding, that is, the idealized and artistic way of creation and lifestyle that human society strives for, from unconsciousness to consciousness, from the pursuit of material needs to both, and the pursuit of spiritual enjoyment. From the "Kingdom of necessity" of design to the "Kingdom of freedom" of design, it is the common dream of designers and consumers to "follow one's inclinations without exceeding the rules". In the 1990s, Japanese designers put forward a plan called "human feeling", which aims to "figure out how to make products used daily feel more comfortable and comfortable", design and manufacture cars, air conditioners and clothes that eliminate pressure and fatigue and help create a "more humane environment", and design "electrical appliances with human feeling". The spiritual factors of design have been raised to a high level. The higher the level of design, the more and more spiritual factors, the more perfect and harmonious the combination of materiality and spirituality, rationalization and humanization. In a sense, the process of continuous development and improvement of design is the process of continuous improvement of human cognition, thought and emotion. Human design is the reflection of human emotion, cultural spirit and ethics. Design is not "emotional", but also "emotional". "Emotion" is reflected in human common design; Design is inanimate. It is also alive, "life" is contained in human beings to things
